Yilan is a hot spring and gourmet destination located just an hour's bus ride from Taipei. True to its reputation as a scallion producing region (Sanxing), Luodong Night Market is famous for its scallion-wrapped meat skewers. In the Jiaoxi hot spring district, the proper way to enjoy whole roasted chicken (Wongyaoji) is to put on gloves and tear into it with your hands. Since it gets crowded with day-trippers from Taipei on weekends, visiting on a weekday is more pleasant.
